The Trump administration was preparing on Wednesday to dispatch scores of government officers to the Bay Area region for a major immigration enforcement operation, triggering condemnation from state officials.

“He dispatches unidentified officers, he dispatches customs officers, he sends out immigration officials, he generates concern and apprehension in the community so that he can take credit for addressing that by dispatching the military forces,” Newsom said. “This is no different than the firestarter extinguishing the inferno.”

City Readiness

San Francisco is the newest metropolitan center targeted by the administration's initiative of mass immigration arrests. The mission is anticipated to provoke a showdown between the federal government and municipal authorities who have committed to prevent militarized immigration enforcement in the city.

San Franciscans have been preparing for an extended period for Trump to fulfill ongoing warnings to deploy forces to the city. At a Wednesday public announcement, San Francisco’s mayor reiterated that the city was prepared.

“For months, we have been expecting the likelihood of an impending government operation in our city,” stated the official, noting that he had enacted new policies on Wednesday to “strengthen the city’s assistance to our foreign-born residents, and make certain our agencies are organized before any national intervention.”

Despite court battles to deployments in a multiple urban areas, including the Windy City, the Pacific Northwest and Los Angeles, Trump has claimed “complete control” to send the military forces in cities, citing the federal statute which enables presidents specific authority to send forces on American territory.

Newsom, who was formerly as San Francisco’s mayor – had vowed to step in “without delay” to a mission in the city. “The notion that the national administration can send forces into our cities with no justification based on facts, no supervision, no responsibility, disregard for regional control – it constitutes an attack on the legal system,” he said on Wednesday.
