UN Removes Penalties on President of Syria Prior to White House Visit

The UN Security Council approved to an American proposal ending penalties on President Ahmed al-Sharaa of Syria ahead of his White House visit next week.

He became transitional president subsequent to commanding an insurgent campaign that removed the former president in the final month of 2024, ending over a decade of civil war.

Washington's ambassador UN ambassador Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "a powerful diplomatic message" that affirmed Syria's transition into "a different period" after Assad's removal.

Previously, he faced global penalties as the leader of the religious organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), once connected to the terrorist network. America delisted HTS from a list of global extremist entities this past July.

More Penalties Removed

Furthermore, global sanctions were ended on restrictions targeting Syria's Interior Minister the interior minister.

The Syrian diplomatic chief applauded the lifting of the sanctions, declaring through digital channels: "The nation shows its gratitude to Washington and allied countries for assisting the country and its population."

Forthcoming Presidential Visit

Sharaa's White House visit this coming Monday comes after President Trump stated the Middle Eastern president achieved "significant advancement" towards bringing peace to the war-torn country.

Subsequent to their talks, Trump said Sharaa had "a real shot for national reconciliation".

The pair met for the first time in May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia while traveling through the region.

After that meeting, the US president described the Syrian as a "strong individual" with a "very strong past".

His former militant faction was al-Qaeda's affiliate within Syria before he cut connections in 2016.

Earlier American Trip

Monday's visit does not represent Sharaa's first trip to the US in the current year. In September, he became the first Syrian leader to present to the UN General Assembly at UN headquarters in almost 60 years.

During his address, he declared the nation was "regaining its deserved status among the nations of the world" while showing support with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
